PCC INTRODUCTION TO ILLUSTRATION

Automatic Drawing of an Interior Space (grayscale drawing materials): I started from the center which was a screen, then I painted in black and then shaded with thin markers. I added line on stroke. I didn’t intend to use 3 ways of drawing techniques but as I progress I discovered different strokes and textures compliment each other and made the drawing more interesting. Even though I tried to capture the perspective and depth of the room multiple papers made the room look very flat.

Morning Glory: I chose Morning Glory as my subject because I have a great childhood memory of planning them at my kindergarten in Tokyo. It was easy to plant, easy to nurture, and brings moments of delight and surprise when the flowers bloom suddenly one morning with unexpected colors. I made sure the essence of the morning glory flowers such as bright gradients and pentagonal lines from dark hue to light, and bright tones of magenta, violet, and ultramarine were captured in both illustrations. I also enjoyed visualizing the spiral forms and shapes of buds and vines using both colored pencils and oil pastels that added interesting movements and accents in both illustrations. While I used the complementary color of orange as a background in the first illustration to highlight the shapes of the flower and leaves, I chose adjacent cooler tones for the second illustration to bring more calmness and to help bring creatures in focus.

Sweet Zine: (11x17 Gouache & Oil Pastel)

To select my topic for my personal zine, I decided again to combine 2 of my favorite things; world travel and sweets. I wish I had more time and space to place the recipe for all, but maybe that can be the 2nd issue. I wanted this zine to be colorful and simple enough soi that I can frame each page individually on my walls for pleasure. Bon Voyage & Bon Appetit!

Illustrated Accordion Artist Book: Time Mech - For my final project, I decided to continue my previous subject; a combination of 2 of my favorite things; Lego and time travel movies. I imagined a world where I could create a Time Machine robot called “Time Mech” made out of various time machines from different time-traveling movies. Time Mech travels through time and “fixes” things of the past.

However, as a punchline at the end, Time Mech goes to the future to change the future by accidents. I continued my favorite mix medium with gouache and colored pencil that allows me to create a 2D flat look with textures, just like Eric Carle has done in his illustrated children’s books.
